I really believe that working for yourself doesn’t have to be as stressful as people make out. Benefit from the mistakes I’ve made and move forward with confidence and ease!

The best thing about having my own private practice is that it’s on my time and it fits around my life and my needs. When I worked in healthcare, I was constantly getting sick, close to burnout and spending all my weekends recovering from the working week. I wasn’t earning enough, I felt scattered and stressed out and I found it difficult to show up for my clients the way that I wanted to. Now I work part time, on my own schedule which leaves me more time to do the things I love and spend time with the people most important to me. My life has joy, I have re-discovered the capacity to be hopeful and my relationship with work is finally healthy. I’ve achieved what I didn’t think was possible – to have a financially sustainable, meaningful, values-driven life and the capacity to truly love the job we do.

How I got here

I started my first online therapy business in 2019, just before moving from the UK to Canada. I couldn’t afford to pay for a costly business coach – but I also didn’t like the idea of the associate model. Why would I want someone else to take a cut of my wage when I’m doing most of the work? Of course without guidance, I made a lot of mistakes. Undercharging, unsuitable clients, too few clients, too many. I worked hours that didn’t suit my life and muddled my way through spreadsheets. It took three years to become financially stable instead of one, and five years to stop freaking out every time I finished with more than one client at the same time! But through the time, effort and mistakes, I also learnt how to run a business not just effectively but successfully. I now have a thriving, six-figure revenue private practice, I’ve never worked more than 20 hours a week including admin and I’m a better therapist and healthier person for it!

Why I started this program

Now I’m at a point in my career where I want to scale back on clinical work and do something that reaches farther. The way my life changed when I started my business was so surprising and wonderful and I’ve always felt passionate about sharing that with others in similar situations. I’ve loved helping friends make the transition to private practice and helping others to understand that we can still help people in a meaningful way without having to sacrifice our health and put our needs last. Nothing makes me happier than getting people feeling excited and hopeful about their potential and watching them achieve what they desire through learning and growth.

I want to mentor professionals and give them something that will truly enrich their lives – the chance to create a set up that speaks to who they want to be and the life they want to live. This program is, for me, the perfect way to provide an associate model that is aligned with my values and offers something that goes beyond the usual. It’s important for me to feel good about how I work and what I put out into the world and I want to make sure that what I’m offering is something really worthwhile!

My business is built on the belief that we should be generous with our knowledge and skills so we can help others thrive. My mission is to foster hope, joy, and the conditions to thrive — to therapy clients, to the providers who serve them, and to the communities around us. The Hope & Joy Clinic will support BC residents. The Hope. Joy. Thrive. program will support the professionals who work there. One percent of every session clients attend will be donated to charities supporting the people of BC.

The model, plainly stated.

For one year, you will work at the Hope & Joy Therapy Clinic providing online therapy. You will keep 60% of each session, the clinic will take 40%, and in return you will get everything detailed on the red card. At the end of the 12 months, you can leave to launch your own private practice, taking your caseload with you. Or if you really love working at the clinic, we can discuss you staying on as an associate.

That’s it! No catches.

What the 40% pays for

Monthly 1:1 mentorship

A full hour with Hannah, working on exactly what you need that month — overcoming obstacles, learning a new skill, money mindset. Whatever you need.

Monthly peer consultation group

A small group session with Hannah and your cohort — case discussion, learning, and connection with colleagues.

6 therapists per clinic

The full clinic infrastructure

Practice management, client systems, admin support, PIPEDA-compliant video platform — all covered.

Referrals & clinic visibility

Featured (and celebrated!) on the Hope & Joy website with a clinic referral network from day one.

A program designed to free you, not keep you

I wanted to create a model with a different intention at its heart: a program explicitly designed to end. Associate models offer enormous value, but this one is built to leave you more independent, more skilled and more financially secure than when you arrived. I’m not here to keep you — I’m here to grow you.

Employed but ready to branch out

Maybe you don’t feel you’re earning as much as you’d like, maybe you’re completely burnt out and dreaming of a part-time situation. Our aim is to help you identify what it is you want and need, and help you to achieve it.

Striving for something independent

Lots of us dream about being our own boss, working on our schedule, calling all the shots. Can confirm – it feels fantastic. We want to get you there.

An online-first therapist

Maybe you love working from home, maybe your circumstances make in-person difficult. It’s possible to build something sustainable from home that works around your family, your health or your preferences.

Allergic to business

We’re taught to be great therapists, not great business people. A lot of us have been conditioned to think making money in a caring profession is a bit gross. We’re here to change the narrative.

Imposter syndrome therapist

You’ve got the desire, you’ve got the skills but you still hear a voice telling you can’t do it. We’ll make sure that by the end of the year, you’ll leave feeling confident, competent and ready to soar.

Not sure you fit any of these?

Tell us about yourself anyway. Each program is tailored so if your situation is different, we can work out whether it’s a good fit. Email [email protected] today.

You must have an active supervisory relationship in place when you sign your contract. Any questions, get in touch.

You’re not just joining a program

You’re joining
a clinic.

The Hope & Joy Therapy Clinic will provide specialist services online to adults in British Columbia. The team will be made up of six therapists and an intake co-ordinator, there to aid clients in finding the right fit. We want to meet people where they’re at, help them move through life’s difficulties, heal wounds and for them to leave in a better place than when they began.

When our first cohort is in place, the Hope & Joy Therapy Clinic website will launch with a beautifully designed, dedicated page for each therapist. We want clients to feel like they’re choosing a real person — warm, compassionate, and skilled in exactly what they need. That’s the kind of clinic you’d be joining.

Working with Hannah was one of the best investments I’ve made in myself and my practice. She helped me turn my ideas into a clear, achievable plan and gave me the confidence to take steps I might not have taken on my own. Her support, encouragement, and accountability meant I accomplished goals much faster than I would have by myself, and I always left our meetings believing that I could truly do this.

Jen Espino

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

I consistently leave conversations with Hannah feeling more grounded and encouraged. She’s someone I turn to for both clinical and business consultation because she’s savvy in both areas. I often bring the questions I’m too embarrassed to ask others to Hannah because she makes me feel accepted through the process. Hannah has helped me grow tremendously as a clinician, and I truly believe I am a better therapist because of working with her. Any clinician would be lucky to learn from and work alongside her.

Dr Paige Thomson

Clinical Psychologist

I gained so much from Hannah’s guidance and support when establishing my private practice as a Clinical Psychologist. She understood and helped me overcome my anxieties about working for myself and offered practical advice around setting up my business. I left meetings with Hannah feeling more empowered and confident in my skills and the direction I wanted my business to grow.

How much control do I have over my schedule?

Complete – we won’t tell you when to work. This is about making private work fit with your life. We can certainly give some guidance and swap things around throughout the year if you find that the times you’re available aren’t resulting in bookings.

Can I work part-time alongside other work?

Yes, this program is designed specifically to be part-time. The minimum hours per week that we expect therapists to work is 5 hours, with our ideal being that you’re working towards 10 hours a week (but honestly, it’s not a dealbreaker if you’re the right fit!). If you want more than 10 hours, that’s where your own private practice comes in!

How much pressure is there to market myself?

You’ll be listed on our website, which will have Google Ads directing traffic to it. We will have dedicated pages for each of our practitioners, giving the opportunity for you to shine. If you’re interested, we can do short-form video interviews to advertise your work to include on the website or on an appropriate social media channel. Our aim is to help you thrive!

Can I build my own practice whilse working at the clinic?

Yes you can! Once you reach your max availability at the clinic (10 clients a week), we encourage you to open up your availability in your private practice. All we ask is that you respectfully do not poach any clinic clients and that you set your rates the same as at the clinic.

What expenses would I still personally pay for?

Professional liability insurance (roughly $80 a year) and clinical supervision.

How is this different from clinical supervision?

Supervision focuses on your clinical work. This mentorship focuses on your business, career, confidence, and life as a practitioner. They’re complementary so you’ll still need your supervisor.

Is it possible to work in-person?

Unfortunately, the model doesn’t really work with the overhead of an in-person therapy space. The cut the clinic would have to take for room rental and the program combined would simply be so much, it wouldn’t be worth it to you.

What experience does Hannah have with building businesses?

Hannah: Over the last 7 years I’ve built two online therapy practices — one with UK clients, one in BC. Along the way I’ve done further training, shifted strategy more than once, and redesigned how I work to better fit my life. The result is a combined six-figure practice I run in under 20 hours a week.
